Empowering Parents and Local Communities

One of the reasons parents choose to educate their children at home or in a private school setting is so they can maintain ultimate authority over their children’s educational process and teaching material. This type of parent-centered education is not only a natural right that should be unquestionable, it should also be encouraged by the state Legislature, because it raises moral children who are well-prepared for growing competition in our smaller commercial world. As part of encouraging parent-centered education, this mentality should also be extended back into the public school systems through local school boards. As such, the state’s role in education will have to be reduced, and any federal or multinational role in education must be eliminated. In detail, here’s what I’d like to do:

  • Support laws that, in general, encourage school choice and competition and allow all parents to choose the best public, private, charter or homeschool program for their children. Repeal laws that attempt to restrict or control alternatives to public education.
  • Institute tax credits or school vouchers, which will introduce competition in education, give more choice to families who cannot afford private school tuition, and ensure that families who choose home or private school do not pay twice for their children’s education.
  • Restore ultimate control over primary and secondary school curriculum and decisions to elected local school boards.
  • Reinstate parental notification laws regarding abortion and ensure that no school is allowed to assist a child under 18 in getting an abortion.
  • Require public schools to inform parents when questionable material will be presented in schools, and allow parents to withdraw their children from such activities.
